Panel Description:

Due to the recent accreditation and curriculum activities of the ACM Special Interest Group on Information Technology Education (SIGITE), CAC of ABET’s accreditation standards for computing programs have undergone a change in its formatting and presentation. This change affects both computer science and information system programs, as well as adds information technology to the computing programs ABET accredits. In parallel with the accreditation effort, SIGITE’s curriculum activities included developing a curriculum standard for information technology baccalaureate programs. This standard was developed with an eye toward facilitating the development of accreditable IT programs. The baccalaureate curriculum is currently nearing the end of its review period and is slated to be presented to ACM curriculum review board for approval in late 2006. SIGITE’s present curriculum efforts focus on developing comparable curriculum documentation for associate degree programs.

Topics include:

  • Changes in CAC of ABET's accreditation standards for computing programs

  • The general criteria for accrediting computing programs

  • The specific criteria for accrediting information technology programs

  • The status of the Information Technology Volume of the ACM's Computing Curricula Series

  • The status of SIGITE's current efforts to define a recommended IT curriculum for associate degree programs

  • The current SIGITE initiatives
